What does it cost to join?

Joining is free, and you will get enough Ducats for two free readings on joining. There are no subscription fees, and it's free to comment on readings. The only cost is to initiate a new reading - click on the coin at the top of the page for details of pricing once you're logged in.

Why are the readings so short?

The meanings given for each card are very basic, just intended to get you started. If you make your readings available for others to comment, then their interpretations may be more detailed, specific and helpful than the basic meanings given for each card. That's the idea of 78Friends.com – it's a social site. Readings are intended to start conversations.

Do I have to share my readings?

No, you can keep them completely private. You can leave your own comments and come back later to review the reading, maybe to see how accurate the reading and your interpretation was after some time has passed.

Who sees my reading if I share it?

You can just choose the friends you share your reading with – just put their email address and invite them to comment. Alternatively, you can share your reading with the whole 78Friends community by checking the box. The advantage here is that you may get comments by some very experienced readers. You can always delete any comments on your reading, or unshare you reading at any time without having to delete it.

Why shouldn't I use my full name as my username?

We prefer that you use a pseudonym or nickname to protect your privacy. While your real friends may know who you are, you're likely to feel more comfortable sharing your readings with the wider 78Friends Community if you're known by a nickname.

Something isn't working right....

Please email us give us as much info as possible - eg your browser, platform etc.

What is the Happy Squirrel?

It's a Wild Card, based on an episode of the Simpsons - we like to think of it as the 79th Friend. You can read more about it on TouchstoneTarot.com. There's a very slight chance it might get left in the deck when you get a reading on 78Friends.com. Oops!

How do I get a different picture next to my comments?

You can upload your own Avatar in gif, jpg or png format. If it's bigger, we'll downsize it to fit - or you can make one specially at 80 x 80 pixels. The maximum filesize is 1 meg. Upload your Avatar from your Profile page - you'll need to be logged in of course!

Who is that girl at the top of the page?

It's a self-portrait by Sofonisba Anguissola. She was one of the key figures in developing the personality-filled style of portraits used in the Touchstone Tarot deck. She said, "Life is full of surprises, I try to capture these precious moments with wide eyes." How different her style was from the idealised, generic style of portraiture that came before her. No vacuous Madonnas for her - there were real, sultry, fiery eyes in the women she painted.

I'm a professional Tarot reader - is it OK to promote my services on here?

No blatant touting for business when you make comments please, although you can mention your profession in your profile and put your url. If people are impressed by your insightful comments they might look at your profile and see your link - yay, we all win. We don't intend this site to be a substitute for professional readings, it's more like a snack between meals than a 3-course tarot dinner ;)

What deck is used here?

The deck is Touchstone Tarot by Kat Black, who also started this site. See 'About' page for more info.

Oops, I made a typo. Why can't I edit my comments?

Apparently that's more complicated so it's still on the To Do list. We are upgrading the functionality bit by bit, starting with Really Simple. Meanwhile to fix a typo, copy and paste your post (Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V) into a new post, make your corrections, then delete your old post. There's always a workaround!

Commenting on readings

Comments are for adding to the meaningfulness of someone's reading, or for learning more about Tarot.

Please add your own insights, thoughts and questions to other peoples readings - it's free to comment and by making the reading public, the owner wants feedback.

If you just keep putting pointless 'me too' comments that just bloat the thread for no reason, we'll delete them and get a bit narky.

That's not to say we discourage newbies from commenting - just try to learn something from your questions if you're new to Tarot - eg ask others for clarification. There are a lot of very experienced tarot readers here and many of them love to help out those new to Tarot.

Please try to be constructive in your comments. Disagree with other commenters by all means, but please be polite about it. We want this to be a nice, safe place where you can learn more about Tarot, and more about yourself too.

You will receive a token reward - one Ducat - for making a comment. This isn't meant to be payment - we want you to comment with the intention of helping. It's just a little thank-you to speed up your accrual of Ducats toward getting a reading of your own.

My Ducats went down!

If one of your comments gets deleted - by yourself, the moderators or the person on whose reading you commented - you will lose the Ducat you were given when you made the comment.

My icon disappeared!

Unfortunately due to human error, in July 2009 all personal icons were deleted from the site and no backup was available. If you could re-upload your icon, we would be very grateful.
